High atop a sandstone mesa is

Sky City, the oldest continu-

ously inhabited community in

the United States.

The home to many of our fa-

vorite artists, Acoma Sky City

has become the National

Trust’s 28th historic site.

Sandra Victorino, Dorothy

Torivio, John Aragon and

Carolyn Concho are but a few

of the world class artists to call

Acoma home.

Sky City is much like it was

hundreds of years ago, and

holds the San Estebal del Rey

Mission church that was com-

pleted by the Spanish in 1640.

Acoma is a spectacular site

with spectacular people. It

indeed is a national treasure.

As a Plains warrior sped horse-

back over the broad landscape,

he generally did it bareback or

perhaps he used a simple

leather blanket.

With the introduction of beads

through the fur trade, the avail-

ability of “pony” beads changed

the complexion of the simple,

functional, saddle blanket con-

siderably.

The colorful new beads led to

some very bold, very artistic

composition based on very

traditional geometric patterns.

The beautiful beaded saddle

blankets weren’t for everyday

use however. They were put

aside for those very special

occasions and events such as

parades and formal ceremonies.

A great example of the North-

ern Plains beaded double saddle

blanket is on display at River

Trading Post in Scottsdale.

This turn of the century blanket

measures 70” and is made of

bison leather.
