The American Indian College Fund recently introduced its newest Pendleton blanket series - The Curtis Blanket Collection. Based on images taken by Edward S. Curtis, the renowned photographer who recorded thousands of Native people at the turn of the 20th century, the collection features Navajo and Hidatsa tribal designs.

Using two Curtis photographs as inspiration, both blankets incorporate design elements that appear in the original photographs as well as added traditional tribal imagery.

The Hidatsa Earth blanket, which was taken from a 1908 photograph, embodies the earth and sky by using traditional colors to combine mountain, star and grass symbols.
