Arts of Native America

Hopi cylinder vases, or tulip vases as they are sometimes known, were originally inspired by the American Art

Pottery movement of the 1880’s, and appealed to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco fashion of the time. The cyl-

inder vase became an authentic expression of the Hopi culture through the intricate design elements represent-

ing many aspects of the ages old Hopi culture. (And, no they were not intended to actually hold water.)

Today, a significant collection of the old Hopi cylinders are on display, and available, at River Trading Post in

Santa Fe. The collection of 18 classic cylinders represent early 20th century creations and are exclusively at

River Trading Post, Santa Fe via a private collection of Hopi antiquities.
