her award-winning pottery at

school, where she learned from

two Acoma women credited

with bringing back Zuni pottery

as an art form. Jennie Laate

and Angelina Medina both

taught and inspired Noreen, as

Noreen is now doing with her

13 year old son, Kenneth.

Recently Noreen was asked to

set up an exhibit of some 3,000

artifacts (including pottery)

which were removed from

Hawikku (an ancestral Zuni

village) by the Hodges expedi-

tion in the early 1900’s.

This Hodges expedition was

commissioned by the Heye

Foundation, and removed over

20,000 artifacts from Zuni. Ex-

Since 1979, Noreen Simplicio,

of Zuni Pueblo, has been creat-

ing fine pottery that both

amuses and awes collectors.

Noreen’s whimsical lizards and

frogs, which crawl in and out of

her traditional seed pots and

bowls, make everyone who sees

them smile.

Her stately pueblos, which cir-

cle the tops of finely painted

ollas, are complete with villag-

ers, pottery, and even little

hand-carved cedar vigas! And

then there are her traditional

ollas. Noreen uses both Zuni

and resurrected Hawikku de-

signs on thin whiteware, which

reminds us all that Noreen is a

traditional Zuni potter at heart.

Noreen learned how to make

cept for the 3,000 returned to

Zuni, the collection is now a

treasured part of the National

Museum of the American In-

dian in Washington DC.

Noreen remembers the day the

artifacts arrived. “It was a very

hot summer day, and the arti-

facts arrived in big black plastic

crates. All of a sudden it

started raining like crazy. It

was such a blessing! We knew

then that the things that were

taken from here were back

home.”

Noreen’s fine pottery is avail-

able at River Trading Post,

Pueblo Arts in Scottsdale,
