River Trading Post has become

known for its list of very top

contemporary Native American

Artists, and our

newest artist is Lisa

Chavez-Thomas, a

member of Isleta

Pueblo.

Her fabulous work

joins that of Cliff Fragua, Ame-

lia Joe-Chandler, Caroline Car-

pio, Ryon Polequaptewa and

other of today’s finest Native

American artists.

Lisa describes herself as a self-

taught pyroengraver, the burn-

ing of an original design onto

the surface of a hand-cleaned

cut and prepared gourd or

handcrafted woodwork piece.

Lisa’s father patiently taught

and guided her through years of

education in drafting, architec-

tural design and construction.

Of her art, Lisa says, “The rev-

erence for our Great Spirit and

our other Deities, the love and

respect for all of nature

and the joys and sor-

rows of being human

are, often, the most

visited subjects that

can be found in my

art.”

Lisa’s delightful bowls, and

burned figures dazzle with

color and minute detail.

You can enjoy Lisa’s work in

our galleries and on our web-

site.
