Edward S. Curtis Photogravures

Edward S. Curtis (1868 – 1952) created approximately 2,200 extraordinary photographs of Native America.  The result was a massive 20-volume encyclopedia entitled “The North American Indian” that was published by the University Press of Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Only 272 copies were sold at a price of $3,000.

River Trading Post has acquired a significant portfolio of original Curtis photogravures and rare drawings especially for collectors that appreciate vintage, original Native Americana.

Curtis has been variously praised and criticized for his photo images of Native Americans.  Criticism generally toward the use of Native Americans to pose and model for his collection, and otherwise romanticizing Native America.
